Lamlash - Hope Cup Winners 2003

Lamlash won the 2003 Hope Cup that was hosted by Brodick Golf Club. In the first round, Lamlash recorded a convincing victory over Whiting Bay to setup a semi-final against home team Brodick. The semi-final saw Lamlash produce some excellent displays of golf and win by a large aggregate score of 6up. The final was played later on that day against Machrie Bay. Lamlash came out the blocks very quickly and were some 15 holes to the good at the conclusion of the match to win the Hope cup for the 5th time in six years. Well done boys!

The Hope Cup, named after Dumbarton M.P. and keen Arran visitor Harry Hope is an inter club competition that in its present format involves a four man team playing foursomes. The Hope Cup rotates round each course on the island every year. Lamlash Have won the hope cup 25 times........including 5 times in the last 6 years. The Last time Lamlash played host to the competition, 2001, the Lamlash Team consisting of D.MacFarlane, B.H.McGunnigle, C. Young and N. Young, found themselves drawn against neighbours Brodick Golf Club at the semi-final stage. Many of the spectators who witnessed this still wonder if they will ever again see such a comeback. With 5 holes to go Lamlash were 4 down and suffering from sustained Brodick pressure, however a birdie at the 16th from the second pairing followed by a win at 17, coupled with the first pair of Craig and Neil winning 17th with par and then producing an excellent birdie at the last , saw the match stand all-square with one hole to play. Incredibly Lamlash won the hole with a bogey 5, after the Brodick pair now wilting under pressure failed to find the green in 3 shots. Lamlash met Whiting Bay in the Final and recorded a comfortable victory.

Congratulations to Lamlash on Winning the 2007 Hope Cup by defeating Brodick by 6 Holes

The Ayrshire Champion of Champions

In the year 2000, 20yr old Blair McGunnigle of Lamlash entered the Ayrshire Champion of Champions competition as Lamlash Champion. In the first round he was handed an away fixture to meet the champion of Royal Troon Golf Club. Blair emerged victorious fom this encounter with a score of 2up. The experience of playing Royal Troon was to stand him in good stead for future rounds. A further 2 home victories and then an away quarter final, followed by a semi-final win at the neautral venue of Royal Troon, he returned the following week for the final staged at the same famous course. The match was played against Skelmorlie Champion J.O'Donnel who held a handicap of 2. The match was a close one until J.O'Donnel pulled away around the turn and then streched his lead to be 4up after 13 holes. Blair then produced two par's and two birdies to level the match with one hole to go. After a missed 12ft putt for par by J.O'Donnel, Blair was left with an 8ft putt for the win. He didn't dissapoint and was named, Ayrshire Champion of Champions for 2000.

The Course Record

The Lamlash Open

The Lamlash Open was founded in 1984, the competition was originally devised as a qualifying tournament for the club matchpaly title known as "The McLean Salver". The competition has since grown from stregnth to stregnth and attracted much sponsorship. Currently the number of competitors entering each year is about 180. Still used as a qualifying competition for the McLean Salver, the highest placed Arran residents go on to contest this Salver. Since 1984 there have been many fantastic scores recorded in the open. The lowest ever round in the open was achieved by Jim Gibson in 1994 with a second round of 53 nett. The lowest ever total was recorded in 1999 by then 13 yr old Jamie Murchie with an excellent score of 59+57=116. In the scratch competition the lowest winning score was recorded by Dougie MacFarlane in 1999 with an exceptional 2 under par score of 62+64=126.

Please note that both the 2007 and 2008 open was restricted to an 18 hole event due to weather conditions.
